Potash Road : Hiking, Petroglyphs & Dinosaur Tracks

No trip to Moab is complete without exploring the attractions along Potash Road or just admiring the scenic drive. Just steps from State Road 279, you can view petroglyphs created by the Southern San Rafael Fremont Indians between 600 and 1300 A.D. The art depicts a variety of scenes including animals, horsemen, hunting motifs and various types of weaponry including spears and shields. This family-friendly adventure takes from approximately two hours roundtrip for the 32-mile journey. Travel from US. 191 north of Colorado River Bridge and continue 5.2 miles on Hwy 279 West until you see the turnoff signs for Indian Writing. Dinosaur tracks are accessible via a short hike on Poison Spider Trailhead.

  • What will I see along Potash Road?

    Follow the signs for “Indian Writing” and explore two large panels of petroglyphs created by the Southern San Rafael Fremont tribe of Indians. Archeologists believe the petroglyphs were created between 600 A.D. and 1300 A.D. Further down the road less than a mile, you’ll be able to look for dinosaur tracks. Locate the Poison Spider Trailhead parking lot and walk to the east end. You’ll spot a large rock 200 yards east and a trail that winds past other rocks with dinosaur tracks.
  • How long does it take to go down the road?
